Toughened Glass is needed where there is a risk of serious injury from falling into or breaking of glass. It is 5 times stronger than standard glass and when it breaks it shatters into tiny pieces.

It is manufactured by heating up flat glass to a temperature of around 700° C and then blowing air on to its surface, quenching it down swiftly and uniformly. It can be divided into two types depending on the degree of heat treatment; Heat- Strengthened Glass or Tempered Glass.

Toughened Glass is produced by heating annealed glass to approximately 650 deg C at which point it begins to soften, its outer surfaces are then cooled rapidly, creating high compression in them. Its strength is increased by a factor of 4 to 5 times that of standard annealed glass, embodying safety and strength.

The toughening process also imparts a unique safety characteristic, so if fully tempered glass breaks, it fractures into relatively harmless fragments, this process significantly reduces the likelihood of injury from broken glass.
